How scoring works
- Words per minute (WPM) uses the standard typing convention: one word = 5 characters, including spaces.
- Gross WPM = all characters you typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. It measures raw speed before mistakes.
- Net WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. This is your headline score — the number employers and typing exams usually mean.
- Accuracy = correct keystrokes ÷ all character keystrokes × 100. Every character key you press counts. Fixing a mistake with Backspace improves your text, but the original wrong keystroke still counts in accuracy — that keeps scores honest and comparable.
- Score points = net WPM × accuracy × 10 for each finished test, added to your lifetime points. A good typing speed is about 40 WPM for everyday typing, 60+ WPM is fast, and 80+ WPM is excellent.

What Is a Good Typing Speed?
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). The average for most computer users is about 40 WPM, but the right target depends on your work. Use these benchmarks to judge your result:
- Under 30 WPM: beginner level, common when you are still looking at the keys
- 30 to 45 WPM: average, enough for everyday email and documents
- 50 to 60 WPM: good, above the requirement for most office jobs
- 65 to 75 WPM: professional typist level
- Over 80 WPM: excellent, the level expected for transcription and data entry work
Speed is only half of the picture. A result of 55 WPM with 97 percent accuracy is more useful than 70 WPM with 85 percent accuracy, because errors cost time to find and fix. Treat 95 percent accuracy or higher as your quality target, then build speed on top of it.
How to Improve Your Typing Speed
The fastest progress comes from short daily practice with correct technique. Learn the home row first and type with all ten fingers, keep your eyes on the text instead of the keyboard, and slow down whenever your accuracy drops below 90 percent. The free lessons on this page are ordered for exactly this path: home row, top row, bottom row, capitals, numbers, punctuation, and then full words and paragraphs. Fifteen minutes a day for two weeks moves most people up a full benchmark band.
Choosing a Test Length
Use 15 or 30 seconds for a warm-up or a quick burst check. The 1 minute test is the standard length for comparing your speed with published benchmarks. Choose 2 minutes for a steadier average that smooths out a slow start, and 5 minutes when you want to test focus and endurance, for example before a typing exam or a data entry job application. Word count tests (10 to 100 words) are best after lessons, when you want to finish a fixed text at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this typing test free?
Yes. The test, the lessons, the practice modes and the certificate are all free, with no signup and no time limits.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and your progress, best scores and lesson stars are saved on your own device.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM uses the standard formula of 5 characters per word. Gross WPM counts every character you type divided by 5 and by the minutes taken. Net WPM counts only your correct characters, so it shows the effect of errors.
What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM is your raw speed before errors. Net WPM removes the characters you typed wrong, so it reflects useful finished work. Most typing tests report net WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
The average is about 40 WPM. Speeds of 50 to 60 WPM are good for office work, professional typists reach 65 to 75 WPM, and anything over 80 WPM is excellent. Aim for 95 percent accuracy or higher alongside the speed.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy counts every character keystroke. When you press a wrong key, the error is recorded at that moment. Using backspace to fix a mistake does not remove the original error from your accuracy, which keeps scores honest and comparable between tests.
How long should a typing test be?
A 1 minute test is the standard for a quick check. Use 15 or 30 seconds as a warm-up, 2 minutes for a steadier average, and 5 minutes to test focus and endurance.
Can I get a certificate for my typing speed?
Yes. Finish a timed test of 60 seconds or longer, or a word test of 50 words or more, and you can download a free certificate with your name, speed and accuracy. It is a Trencada result certificate for personal use, and it is not an accredited qualification.
Does the test work on mobile?
Yes, the tests work on phones and tablets with the on-screen keyboard. For the lessons and for your best scores, a physical keyboard is recommended, because the lessons teach touch typing with all ten fingers.
How can I improve my typing speed?
Practice a little every day, keep your eyes on the text instead of the keys, and put accuracy before speed. Work through the free lessons in order, from the home row to full paragraphs, and your speed will rise as the finger movements become automatic.
