About This Tool

Introduction: Is Your PDF Accessible?

Millions of people rely on screen readers — and most PDFs fail them. Missing tags, no document language, images without descriptions, or a scan with no text layer can make your document unreadable to assistive technology. Trencada's PDF Accessibility Checker runs six automated checks against your file and gives you a clear score plus plain-language fix tips. Everything happens in your browser — your document is never uploaded.

What It Checks

  • Readable text — is there a real text layer, or is this a scan a screen reader cannot read?
  • Document title — screen readers announce the title; a missing one is a WCAG failure.
  • Document language — without it, screen readers mispronounce content.
  • Tagged structure — tags define the logical reading order for assistive technology.
  • Image descriptions — every meaningful image needs alt text.
  • Embedded fonts — unembedded fonts can break text extraction for assistive tech.

How to Use It

  1. Drop in your PDF (up to 50 MB).
  2. Press Check accessibility and review your score out of 100.
  3. Expand each check for fix tips — most issues are fixed in your authoring tool before export.
  4. Download the report to share with your team or clients.

Honest Limits

These are automated basic checks covering the most common WCAG and PDF/UA issues. They catch the structural problems that affect most documents, but they do not replace a full manual accessibility audit — things like logical reading order quality and color contrast still need human review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a PDF accessible?

At minimum: real text (not a scan), a tagged structure, a declared language, a meaningful title, alt text on images, and embedded fonts. This checker tests all six.

My PDF failed the tags check. How do I fix it?

Re-export with tagging enabled — in Word, tick Document structure tags when saving as PDF; in Acrobat, run the built-in Accessibility checker and use Autotag Document.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire check runs locally in your browser using JavaScript PDF libraries. There is no upload, no account, and no server processing.
